I’m busy re-entering home life. But I paused a moment (like one of these resting llamas at the Hare Krishna temple in Utah) to run the numbers from my Round America with a Duck journey*:
175,300: Views of #RoundAmericaWithADuck on TikTok. By the way, everyone’s always asking about Bernard, from way back at the New York City part of the journey. I’ll need to circle back with him:
15,900: Dollars –the value of my WWOOF volunteer time, per the latest federal hourly volunteer-value standards
7,481.20: Total intercity miles (mostly buses and trains)
7,138: Photos taken. See some here on Instagram.
1,016: Total bike miles — mostly around cities and on/around farms, although there was an intercity ride from Boulder to Denver
505: Hours donated WWOOFing — see my WWOOF profile and reviews here!
31: Today’s Nice Stranger street portraits added to my ongoing photo essay
30: Farm days without either a clothes washer or dryer (hand-washing became a great time to meditate and chat with passersby)
24: States visited/crossed
23.5: Weeks spent traveling
18: Weeks spent WWOOFing
10: Times I almost quit. (I kept going.)
6: Farms/ranches/gardens where I’ve WWOOFed (farm that donates 100% to those in need in Georgia; goat farm on repurposed tobacco land in North Carolina; alpaca/eco-spirituality farm in Kansas; homestead in Boulder, CO; Hare Krishan temple/llama ranch in Utah; lavender farm/llama ranch in the high desert mountains of California) See TikTok for video from all these places.
6: Bike flats — I got 2 in Kansas, 2 in Colorado, and 2 in Utah
6: Nights in hotels (2 in Joplin, Missouri; 2 in Ellis, Kansas; 1 in Provo, Utah; 1 in Las Vegas, Nevada) plus a few family nights in hotels in New York and Los Angeles (which I considered breaks from the journey)
6: Religious services attended (1 Cowboy Church, 4 Krishna Love Feasts, 1 Jewish Shabbat service)
5: Free pairs of my BikeBloom upcycled bike tube earrings I left in cities
4: Camelid-family herds with which I worked (1 herd of alpacas in Kansas; 1 herd of llamas in Utah; 2 herds of llamas in California;, 0 camels, vicuñas or guanacos)
4: Llama tours I led (at the Krishna temple in Utah)
3: Times I was by a Route 66 sign
3: Times I hula-hooped
3: Times I shuffledanced up staircases
2: Types of motor vehicles I drove (a tractor and an ATV/quad/dune buggy thing)
2: Nights in an AirBAndB (Salt Lake City, Utah)
2: Nights at hostels (1 in Philly; 1 in New Orleans — both fabulous)
2: Oceans where I dipped my bike tire
1: Time I rode a horse (in the high desert of California)
1: Adult woman I taught to ride a bike (meet more here)
1: Earthquake (California), plus many other storms and climate challenges
Countless: Times I did this little dance
*I’ll do a separate budget post once I calculate the final numbers. I aimed to do this journey on the same budget as when I backpacked on a very tight budget through 10 countries in Europe in 1985.
